Hi, My name is Clay. Im a fellow Mainer. Ive been a big fan for a long time. My friend gave me a copy of Wishbone years ago and Ive been a fan ever since. Im a songwriter, and have always wondered if my songs were actually any good. I write country, blues and folk/rock type stuff. My question for you is, is there a safe way to find an ear for these songs? Can you recommend anyone, or any place I should start? This is my biggest passion and Im just looking for a little direction. Thank you for all the great music youve put out there!!
Hey Clay, If you enjoy writing and playing your songs, then they're "good," at least on one level. If you want to try them out on the public you could play them at parties (clambake!) or the local open mic, and see what kind of reaction you get. Through the open mics you might find a small group of like-minded writers who you'll eventually trust enough to bounce ideas back and forth with, and maybe write together. If you're too shy for all that, make a simple recording and pass them around to friends. If they ask for more, then you must be good!
No ?. Just wanted say I was researching a tune you had written and came across the song about some one who dies at 29. It struck home as my husband died in Beirut Lebanon at age 29, in 1983. It meant something to me even though the song is about something a little different. I am still bowled over that he did die at 29 and it was such a waste. Then I listened to the song for the Vets and I guess you would say I am now a fan. I am also a Vet. I will buy some of your music when I have some room on my iPod. I am in the process of editing now. I know that at times I am told how something I did effected someone in a nice way. Wanted to do the same for you. Thanks.Slaid Cleaves responded on 04/26/2015 Next question
Thanks so much for responding! I've actually been writing for a long time. I've played at many open mics and even some paying gigs. I actually played a benefit venue st the St. Lawrence arts center in portland. Do you know that place? Ive always told by friends and family that I should do something with my songs. Deep down, playing music is my dream. But even starting out writing or providing one of my songs for another artist would be amazing. I just don't know a safe venue to do that ya know?Slaid Cleaves responded on 04/27/2015
